COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gary Norris took a photo of the old train+built in 1924 while Leo Frymire watched during a Sunday tour at Lauridsen Boulevard and Chase Street in Port Angeles. More than 100 people saw a talk at the Port Angeles Main Library+and the North Olympic History Center gave $1,000 to help the Restore the 4! group fix the train.  Peninsula Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding has selected local Rebecca Benjamin as its new executive director following a national search, the board confirmed. She will begin on June 3 and implement a plan with milestones at 30 days, 60 days and 90 days—ensuring a smooth leadership transition and continued program growth.  Peninsula Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senator Mike Chapman of Port Angeles voted against the budget approved on March 31 because he said it used nearly all the rainy day reserves, relied on uncollected tax revenues, and would hurt local businesses (including trucking companies and local pharmacies). Negotiations will begin soon and the final budget must pass by April 27 before the governor can sign it into law.  My Clallam County
  • The state Supreme Court ruled in favor of four Port Angeles City Council members on Thursday, saying John Worthington of Sequim did not have standing to recall them because he does not live in the same political subdivision. The court clarified that only local legal voters can seek a recall, and Worthington filed a motion on Friday to have the decision reconsidered + he was ordered to pay about $74,000 in attorney fees.  Peninsula Daily News
  • Port Angeles is conducting road improvements at Lincoln Park until April 21—workers began on Monday to fix potholes, resurface roads and parking lots, and install bollards to protect tree roots—while the park remains closed from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays with youth sports and the dog park staying open.  Peninsula Daily News
  • Former Washington Supreme Court Justice Susan Owens, who retired at the end of December after a 44-year career, died on Friday in California while visiting family at age 75. State Supreme Court Chief Justice Debra Stephens said Owens was known for her wit and strong sense of justice and noted that a memorial will be planned to honor her contributions.  Peninsula Daily News
