ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ In early March, visitors at Fort Worden State Park found a fossilized tusk eroding from a sandstone bluff. - ➤ Washington Sea Grant received $185,000 in state funding last fall to work with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to sequence the invasive European green crab genome—an effort to guide long-term control measures—and the research is underway to identify the genes that help green crabs thrive along our coast. - ➤ EFM, a forest management firm, bought 68,000 acres in the North Olympic Peninsula for over $200 million and will use climate-smart practices including longer rotations and thinning to boost forest health. About 37,000 acres lie in Clallam County and 31,000 in Jefferson — the company is working with local tribes, the Wild Salmon Center, and others to enhance public access and environmental resilience.
