Good morning, Port Angeles. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 24th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At its March 27 meeting, the North Olympic Library System Board of Trustees recognized three major donations to fund room naming at the new Sequim Library. The donations include a $165,509 bequest from James and Agnes Williams that will name a conference room for ten people and two $50,000 gifts that will name study rooms for Brad and Janet Littlefield as well as for Mark and Sherry Meythaler, while construction began last spring with completion expected this summer.  Peninsula Daily News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire on West 8th Street on April 23 displaced a family and claimed a pet dog when Port Angeles Fire Department crews were dispatched at (3:18 p.m.) to (1023 West 8th Street) amid heavy smoke and an active basement fire.  My Clallam County

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Port Angeles officials say that prevailing wage rates on publicly funded affordable housing projects are driving up building costs in Clallam County as high interest rates and strict regulations add to the challenge — local experts explain the rates often exceed local market pay due to limited survey data. They note the higher wages reduce bids from smaller contractors and shift funds to non-local companies.  Peninsula Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Port of Port Angeles commissioners approved a roof rehabilitation project that will use a rubberized silicone coating on two buildings for $393,834—saving nearly $56,000 from the original roof overlay plan and extending the roofs' life by 20 years, with work set to begin in June and finish by the end of August. McKinley Paper Company has moved out of a 9,600-square-foot warehouse at Marine Drive, and port officials now plan to seek a tenant who does not hinder log yard operations.  Peninsula Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Law enforcement agencies across the North Olympic Peninsula are holding National Drug Takeback Day on Saturday so community members can safely dispose of expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs. Residents in Port Angeles can drop off medications at the Clallam County Courthouse parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—other drop-off sites are also available in Sequim, Forks and nearby areas.  Peninsula Daily News
