On Thursday, five Clallam County residents will receive the 2025 Community Service Awards at the Port Angeles Senior—Community Center with a reception at 6:30 p.m. and the program at 7 p.m. The awards honor Heidi Simpson, John and Karolyn Burdick, Sherrilyn Phillips, and Paul Forrest for their significant volunteer work in the community.

At a recent Port Angeles School Board meeting, principal Rhonda Kromm explained that the district’s special education services have grown to serve 658 students—projected to exceed room capacity next month—so a new classroom will be added this fall.

Administrators also discussed expanding the Family Navigator program to better support students facing homelessness and confirmed a board vote on utilities upgrades at Stevens Middle School scheduled for May 30 at 10 a.m.

County officials will meet next week on the Peninsula for several hybrid sessions.

Clallam County will hold meetings with Port Angeles officials at 11 a.m. Monday and with the Quileute Tribal Council at 1 p.m. Friday, while Jefferson County and other local bodies will discuss budgets, debris removal, water, and public safety + agendas are posted online for public comment.

Rep. Steve Tharinger of Port Townsend backed a new law to improve public access to Washington’s All-Payer Claims Database by removing an exemption for proprietary financial information.

The bill, which aligns state rules with federal guidelines, is set to take effect later this year—helping patients, providers and policymakers better assess cost savings.

Effective May 1, Corrections Deputy Ed Bauck will take over as Animal Control Deputy for the Clallam County Sheriff’s Department after Deputy Tracey Kellas retired last year.

The appointment comes as the department managed over 1,000 animal control calls in 2024—calls ranging from stray reports to animal abuse—and aims to ease the workload on patrol deputies.

The Clallam County Assessor’s Office will keep its reduced hours until May 22 to manage a growing backlog from staffing cuts and increased demand—county commissioners approved the change to allow more time for processing nearly 500 exemption applications.

The office is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the delays may lead to incorrect tax bills for qualifying seniors.

An after-hours emergency pet clinic will open in Sequim on June 6 at 6 p.m. inside Pacific Northwest Veterinary Hospital—providing emergency and end-of-life care for cats and dogs.

The clinic will charge $175 for an exam and may require authorization for up to $1,000 for critical stabilization—while Pet Emergency Group tests local demand and supports vet tech education with scholarships.

In Sequim softball on April 25, the Wolves played their best game of the year but lost eight to three to the North Mason Bulldogs and will face Bainbridge on Monday.

In Port Angeles, the Roughriders beat Bremerton eighteen to zero in baseball and will travel to Orting today to face the Cardinal team — the varsity golf team finished league play at nine to one with all players qualifying for Monday's championships.
