EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Port Angeles School District board approved a $1.981 million budget cut for the 2025-2026 school year to balance a growing deficit without laying off staff — further cuts may occur if Title 1 funding is reduced. The board set a $30 million bond sale on May 20 to fund new school construction and opened kindergarten registration for children turning five on or before Sept. 1. Peninsula Daily News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ EFM completed a deal with Microsoft to deliver up to 700,000 carbon credits from 68,000 acres of forestland on the Olympic Peninsula — Microsoft also invested in EFM’s Fund IV, which may earn up to 2.3 million credits later. The agreement will support improved forest management and a more sustainable timber industry. Peninsula Daily News

- ➤ The Clallam County elections office will hold a special three-day filing period from 8 a.m. Wednesday to 5 p.m. Friday for candidates filing for the four offices that had no filings during the regular period, with filings accepted online anytime and in person at the Clallam County Courthouse. If an office receives no filing, it will be removed from the general election ballot. Peninsula Daily News
- ➤ City Engineer Jonathan Boehme explained that new traffic lights on First, Front, and Lincoln streets were installed to boost pedestrian safety as part of a joint project with the state Department of Transportation. The lights show a no right turn on red sign that activates when pedestrians press the button and then turns off to allow right turns — a change that prompted questions from local listener Tammy Hartley. - ➤ At the Olympic League track championships on May 12, Port Angeles High School athlete Faerin Tait was named Girls Athlete of the Year after winning the 100-meter hurdles, finishing second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in the 400-meter race, with her relay team posting the third-fastest time statewide — a top honor for the team — while Port Angeles goalkeeper Gus Hallberg stopped a penalty kick and scored the game-winning goal in overtime during a soccer match.
