ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two people were rescued by bystanders from a big fire at a residence on Mount Walker near milepost 301 on U.S. Highway 101 Thursday night — they were taken to Jefferson Healthcare for evaluation while multiple fire crews worked over 90 minutes to control the blaze.  Peninsula Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Crescent High School Jazz Band performed Friday as the opening act at the Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts at Vern Burton Community Center in Port Angeles, where many acts offered food, fun, and crafts over three days. The festival takes place on five stages.  Peninsula Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Since January, tourism from Canada has dropped in Port Angeles as ferry rides, hotel stays and event sign-ups fell—Black Ball Ferry now will start its regular summer schedule on June 27. Local leaders and business officials are watching these declines closely as they adjust plans to welcome Canadian visitors when conditions improve.  Peninsula Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state Department of Transportation reopened U.S. Highway 101 at Tumwater Creek, ending detours that had rerouted traffic from downtown Port Angeles since March 3. Crews will continue excavation under the new bridge and start in-water work this summer—drivers will experience alternating one-way traffic on weekdays until the project finishes this fall.  Peninsula Daily News
  • At a Port Angeles meeting on May 23rd at 11:23 a.m., the Olympic Medical Center Board of Commissioners moved its partnership process from evaluation to decision by approving a resolution that calls for focused talks with potential partners—yet no names were released.
