  • Port Angeles UPS driver Corey Alton retired after a 36-year career during which he drove 3.6 million miles without an accident—family, friends and co-workers gathered at Traylor’s restaurant to bid him a fond farewell, and he now looks forward to more time with his loved ones. This milestone comes after decades of hard work and safe driving that earned him a place in UPS’ Circle of Honor.  Peninsula Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Port Angeles School District sold its first bonds last week to raise funds for a new high school and Franklin Elementary School as part of a plan to build three schools by 2029. Superintendent Marty Brewer said the initial $30 million covers soft costs until December and set a 4.3% interest rate while noting that improved facilities should reverse declining enrollments—Assistant Superintendent Michelle Olsen will succeed him next year.  My Clallam County

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Clallam County Superior Court denied environmentalists’ request to stop logging on Parched and Tree Well parcels in the Elwha Watershed and ordered the DNR to file records by June 18 — logging is not set to begin until next year. Activists have blocked access to Parched with a tree sit that will continue until an injunction is requested at a hearing on June 6 at 1:30 p.m.  Peninsula Daily News

  • The planned Marine Discovery Center on the Port Angeles waterfront reached 72% of its funding goal after Governor Ferguson signed a capital budget bill that provided $1 million—center staff still needs $2.5 million in pledges and donations to proceed. Krazan & Associates and HDR Archeology have begun collecting soil data and will have their reports within a month.  My Clallam County
  • Washington will offer a free fishing weekend on June 7-8 when anglers do not need a license for many fish types - parking is free at state parks and wildlife areas. Anglers must follow rules for season dates, size limits and gear, and species like salmon and steelhead still require a license.  My Clallam County
