- ➤ On Wednesday around 1 p.m., a young marmot hitched a ride on a Hurricane Ridge shuttle bus from Gateway Transit Center before being spotted under a local restaurant's outdoor deck. Wildlife biologist Miranda Terwilliger safely captured the animal and returned it to its parents near Obstruction Point Road—Clallam Transit will now check engine compartments to prevent new stowaways. - ➤ A 30-year-old Port Angeles man, Justin J. Radisich, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree robbery and was sentenced to 15 years for a 2024 armed Dollar Tree robbery on East Highway 101+ he held two employees at gunpoint and took about $1,900 before fleeing in a stolen vehicle, authorities said. - ➤ Aramark will no longer operate concessions in Olympic National Park after more than a decade, and Explor Olympic—a subsidiary of Ortega National Parks—has been selected to take over visitor services. The new contract will run from February 1, 2026 until January 31, 2038 + Explor Olympic will offer lodging, food, beverage, retail and rental equipment at Lake Crescent Lodge, Log Cabin Resort, Fairholme Store, and a temporary setup at Hurricane Ridge with further details expected soon. - ➤ Local government boards and commissions will meet next week to discuss issues such as a proposed monument for Justice Susan Owens and an opioid workshop by county commissioners. - ➤ Port Angeles changed its short-term rental code on May 8 so that owners with previously compliant units must update them with full building standards or switch to a Type II license—some updates cost up to $900. City staff gave affected owners two weeks to decide and five have begun a 90-day progress period, and if they wait until their current license expires, few Type II licenses will be available—risking a loss of a key income source.
