Good morning, Port Angeles. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 12th of June.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Construction has begun on a new middle school in Port Angeles set to open in 2027, and a committee appointed by superintendent Marty Brewer will propose four new names at today's school board meeting—Hurricane Ridge Middle School, Riverstone Middle School, Elwha River Middle School, and Port Angeles Middle School. Hurricane Ridge Middle School is the leading choice because it is visible from the campus and carries strong cultural and local significance.  My Clallam County

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Clallam County PUD declared a Stage 2 Water Alert on Tuesday, June 11 for the Carlsborg, Evergreen, Port Angeles Composite and Panoramic Heights water systems—asking customers to conserve water as a state drought declaration expands due to low snowpack and rain. City Manager Nathan West said the Port Angeles system is not expected to issue a similar alert—current flows remain above criteria for a Stage II shortage.  My Clallam County

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The North Olympic History Center declined Port Angeles’ $788,000 offer for the historic Lincoln School property on Tuesday, saying it lacked room for its collection. City officials said they had worked for over a year on plans to preserve the building—redeveloping it into multifamily housing—and expressed disappointment over the missed opportunity.  Peninsula Daily News
  • The North Olympic History Center board decided Monday night not to sell the old Lincoln School property to the City for conversion into multi-family housing—choosing to preserve the expensive gymnasium—and will instead seek a buyer for the northern acre of its two-acre campus to help fund the school's removal. This move reflects concerns over losing critical cultural heritage and the high costs of replacing the building.  My Clallam County
