  • Mike O’Brien watched his dog Nara catch a flying disc and his other dog Copper wait his turn to fetch a ball on Thursday at Erickson Playfield in Port Angeles—he said both activities are favorites with his pets.  Peninsula Daily News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A group of seven business people from Jefferson and Clallam counties has started a 40-week advisor training program with EDC Team Jefferson — the first cohort to use funds from a $1.2 million Recompete grant — to help strengthen local small businesses. The program will run in eight five-week blocks and award a certificate upon completion as part of efforts to build more business support on the Olympic Peninsula.  Peninsula Daily News

  • Maintenance workers (Brian Phillips, Jeff Clark, and Noah Mohmand) hung a banner outside the Port Angeles Public Library to promote its Summer Reading Program that offers free books and prizes at library branches in Port Angeles, Sequim, Forks and Clallam Bay and runs from today through Aug. 23.  Peninsula Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Port Angeles is entering the final cleanup phase for the old Rayonier Mill site as the Washington Department of Ecology releases a draft plan for the most polluted areas—public comments are open until August 12 and a meeting is set for July 8 at Field Arts & Events Hall. If approved, the plan will require Rayonier to cover an estimated $30M for a cleanup that could take up to ten years.  My Clallam County

  • The state Department of Ecology opened a 60-day public comment period for the cleanup of the former Rayonier Mill site on the east side of Port Angeles Harbor that runs from today through Aug. 12 — a public meeting and open house is set for July 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Donna M. Morris Theater at Field Arts & Events Hall.  Peninsula Daily News
  • Cmdr. Earl Potter replaced Cmdr. Adam Disque as commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Active during a ceremony in San Diego on Sunday—this cutter is homeported at Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles and is the only medium-endurance cutter on the West Coast.  Peninsula Daily News
  • Nate Adkisson ended his campaign for the Port of Port Angeles Board of Commissioners on Tuesday because his doctor advised him to stop after complications from Ramsay Hunt Syndrome—leaving incumbent commissioner Colleen McAleer unopposed in the November general election.  Peninsula Daily News
  • Port of Port Angeles commissioners approved a provisional cost-sharing pact +the port, the city, Georgia-Pacific, Merrill & Ring, Nippon Paper Industries and Owens Corning each will cover one-sixth of the cleanup cost+ for western Port Angeles Harbor that was impacted by legacy industrial pollution. Commissioners also awarded a $423,454 contract for Phase 4 of the taxiway project at Fairchild Airport +with FAA funding 95% and the remaining cost split by the port and state, and they contracted Miller & Company for legal counsel+ to support the port as a foreign-trade zone.  Peninsula Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sunrise Meats, Inc. of Port Angeles has issued a recall for its smoked wild white king salmon due to possible Listeria contamination—routine state tests detected the bacteria and the product with a sell by date of July 21 should be returned for a refund. No illnesses have been reported, and the recall is being managed by the company.  Peninsula Daily News
