Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 8th of July.
Good morning, Port Angeles.
🏘️ Community
Young Native people gathered in Port Angeles at a two-and-a-half-day summit hosted by the Lower Elwha Klallam and Spokane Tribes to build leadership, share traditional storytelling (talking circles), and learn substance use prevention skills while elders and youth together discussed community priorities.
🌲 Environment
Mount Tom Creek fire burns on a steep, forested slope 5 miles west of Mount Olympus, covering 68 acres with no containment.
Fire officials use indirect tactics with camera + helicopter monitoring as recent rain fails to reach the forest floor and smoke drifts, possibly affecting Port Angeles.
🏛️ Government
The Port of Port Angeles will take over direct management of the marina and boatyard starting Wednesday, July 15 after PetroCard stops handling fuel and services.
New hires are being sought and a review of current procedures is planned to ensure a smooth transition.
🏈 Sports
North Washington Cal Ripken Tournament in Port Angeles is seeking volunteers for concession stands from July 9 through 12 to help fund local youth baseball and softball programs.
Interested volunteers can sign up by scanning the QR code on the volunteer flyer.
