CULTURE NEWS

  • Canoes reached Elwha Beach on July 31st as strong seas forced them to land quickly, and Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe members greeted the arrivals with singing & drumming to honor the removal of the dams and celebrate Indigenous culture. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, all campfires including charcoal grills are banned in Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest—this measure stops any fire that produces ash due to high fire danger. Visitors may use gas or propane stoves, lanterns and heating devices if no flammable material is within 3 feet—officials advise caution and proper fire reporting.  Peninsula Daily News
  • Crews from multiple agencies are still cleaning up Indian Creek after a tanker truck spilled nearly 3,000 gallons (2,800 gallons of gas and 172 gallons of diesel) on July 18 near Port Angeles, using booms to block and collect the fuel before it reached the city's drinking water reservoir. Jessica Kulaas from the State Department of Ecology said the cleanup will continue for another week to a week and a half before the response transitions to long-term restoration.  My Clallam County

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Port Angeles will receive about $2.66 million from opioid settlement funds paid over 15 years — most in the first three years—to support programs like Operation Shielding Hope that help combat the opioid crisis.
