- ➤ North Olympic Peninsula food banks are preparing for more customers after a new federal budget cut to SNAP benefits will hit families in the coming years—Jefferson County and Sequim food banks have already seen a rise in households served. They may soon reduce food distribution if rising costs and reduced funding continue to limit supplies for local families. Peninsula Daily News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Superintendent Olsen said the board is considering renaming Stevens Middle School as a new middle school on the current site is set to open in 2028 and that the project will not add extra costs because it is funded by a $52.6 million+five-year capital levy approved by voters. A committee of school staff, students and tribal members proposed four names, with a public comment meeting on Aug. 21 at Lincoln Center and a vote on the new name scheduled for Sept. 25. - ➤ The City of Port Angeles submitted its official public comment on Ecology’s cleanup plan for the Rayonier Mill Site on August 7 and backed Cleanup Alternative Five—calling for a complete and permanent cleanup instead of leaving contaminants in a mound. Ecology’s Alternative 3 would limit future mixed-use opportunities, and community members are encouraged to submit comments by August 12. My Clallam County
- ➤ Workers with A&R Solar, Millican Crane Service and Trane Technologies installed a battery energy storage system at the Port Angeles Senior Center on Friday. The city got a $450,000 grant from the state Department of Commerce to install the system and a solar array that will help heat and cool the building if the power goes out. Peninsula Daily News

- ➤ Mark Gregson has been named interim CEO of Olympic Medical Center after the board voted 5—2 last Friday to replace Darryl Wolfe who resigned on July 31. Gregson, who is on his 21st interim assignment, will begin before the end of August — he will serve until a permanent CEO is hired. Peninsula Daily News
