ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday at 10:43 p.m., Port Angeles firefighters rescued a person and their golden retriever from a house fire on West Seventh Street and contained the blaze after a ladder was raised to a balcony — the cause was determined to be accidental from dog food on the stove and no injuries were reported. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Port Angeles will expand its over-the-counter permitting program Super Tuesdays to every business day—after the city council made the community development technician position permanent. The technician has issued over 230 OTC permits this year and the expanded service will begin this fall. Peninsula Daily News
- ➤ Port Angeles declared a Stage II water shortage because low flows in the Elwha River have reduced the city's water supply — officials urge residents to conserve water by installing low-flow fixtures and cutting back on lawn watering and other non-essential uses. Peninsula Daily News
- ➤ Port Angeles School District board unanimously approved a $63 million budget for the 2025-2026 school year at a special meeting on August 14th; the plan makes cuts to several staff positions to address rising costs and flat funding while expecting enrollment of 3,223 students. The board also approved a $61.8 million guaranteed maximum price agreement with FORMA Construction to modernize Stevens Middle School—its gym will close April 1 to January 1 for upgrades, the classroom wing will be completed by April 12, and a grand opening is planned for September.
