ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Wildfire smoke from the Bear Gulch Fire near Lake Cushman and the Tunnel Creek Fire near Quilcene blanketed the North Olympic Peninsula yesterday as residents noticed heavy smoke and some ash falling. Shifting winds lowered air quality, though a change in wind direction and expected rain may help clear the haze soon. My Clallam County
- ➤ Forecasters say the Pacific Northwest will see above-normal rainfall next week and that rain will ease smoke and dry weather in Port Angeles. The National Weather Service estimates a 50 to 60 percent chance of rain in most areas and a 60 to 70 percent chance along the coast. My Clallam County
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The state Department of Transportation will close the Hood Canal Bridge on Highway 104 from 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and reopen it at 5:30 a.m. Monday through Friday so work crews can repair dents in the steel track that affect the drawspan's alignment—this work must be done before the next storm season. - ➤ Clallam Transit is starting its search for a new general manager next month after the board hired Karras Consulting Group and set a salary range of $160,000—$185,000 with virtual interviews beginning around Oct. 1. A Sept. 9 assault on a driver at Lincoln—First streets has led the agency to boost safety with more de-escalation training and plans to review its board makeup while it prepares a staff celebration on Oct. 13. - ➤ Port Angeles City Council and Clallam County Board approved the design and construction agreement for the joint public safety facility estimated at $22 million—City Manager Nathan West and County Administrator Todd Mielke will sign on behalf of their jurisdictions as the project shifts to construction with bids expected soon, a possible groundbreaking in November, and a ribbon-cutting planned for April 2027.
