Good morning, Port Angeles. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 4th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cycling volunteer Ron Adler was hurt in a bike accident on May 30 and is now paralyzed from the chest down; he was airlifted to a Seattle hospital and is now in rehab as the community raises funds to cover his care and home changes—support that aims to help him recover in time for his granddaughter’s wedding and a return to his community work.  Peninsula Daily News
  • State funding and federal food items will now be managed by the Port Angeles Food Bank to help serve food pantries in Clallam and Jefferson counties instead of Olympic Community Action Programs. The change gives new state money to the Jefferson County Food Bank Association—part of an annual $473,261.40 aid expected to improve food distribution.  Peninsula Daily News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spirit Halloween opened its seasonal store at 1940 E. First St. in Port Angeles Plaza—formerly a Big Lots—where nine-year-old Leif Bishop and his father Jason were startled when a prop lifted its mask to a scary sound; the store will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Halloween and close at 9 p.m. on Sundays. The chain moved from Sequim to Port Angeles this year and is one of 1,400 locations across North America.  Peninsula Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Many groups on the North Olympic Peninsula have been awarded more than $61 million in salmon recovery funds from state and federal sources, and local organizations will use the money to clear weeds along the Calawah River, plant trees, and fix riverbanks to help salmon. The funding, provided by the state Salmon Recovery Funding Board and Puget Sound Partnership, is aimed at improving habitat for threatened salmon runs—an important step to reverse decades of river damage.  My Clallam County
  • Ebb Carbon’s Project Macoma launched Thursday on the Port Angeles waterfront after a summer testing phase and now pulls seawater from the harbor to make it less acidic—improving its ability to capture carbon dioxide. The process, developed with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, complies with state ecology standards as sensors monitor treated water at Marine Terminal 7.  Peninsula Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Port Angeles is asking residents for input on a planned bike boulevard project to make travel safer for cyclists and pedestrians on the west side — it will connect bike routes on 10th Street west of I to the Eighth Street bridges. An online survey is open until Oct. 15 to guide the design of the fully grant-funded project provided by WSDOT.  Peninsula Daily News
  • CARLSBORG — Clallam County Public Utility District No. 1 lowered its drought response for the Island View Water System from stage 4 to stage 3 and reduced its response for the Clallam Bay/Sekiu system from stage 3 to stage 2. This easing of water restrictions will encourage customers to conserve water efficiently — using indoor and outdoor methods such as fixing leaks and operating full washers.  Peninsula Daily News
  • WSDOT Administrator Steve Roark told Clallam County Commissioners that a $50 million federal grant will fund repairs to the west half superstructure of the Hood Canal Bridge in coming years—maintenance on the draw span rollers and center locks continues as crews plan to manage traffic with potential shuttle services. The work will follow similar strategies used when the east half was replaced in 2009.  My Clallam County

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sequim Wolves won 7 to 0 over Bremerton with Kiley Winter scoring a hat trick and Ruby Horgan Moxley scoring twice—Port Angeles Roughriders beat Kingston 3 to 1 with early goals by Teanna Clark, Emma Desjardins, and Lilly Anne Lancaster. The Wolves will play Kingston and the Roughriders will host North Mason on Tuesday night.  My Clallam County
