Master Gardener March Picker

Are you surprised to learn that our native bigleaf maple trees (Acer macrophyllum) can be tapped to produce syrup? Tapping locally during winter months can become a fun, sweet hobby! Bigleaf maple syrup’s unique flavor profile often features deep notes of caramel and vanilla, setting it apart from traditional maple syrup. Join Clallam County Master Gardener March Picker for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation, “Bigleaf Maple Sugaring,” Thursday, November 12th, 1– 2:15 p.m. at the Vern Burton Community Center Meeting Rooms, 308 E. 4th Street in Port Angeles.

March will introduce the fundamentals of collecting and processing sap from your own trees on a small, hobbyist scale. Attendees will learn the basic practices used to tap trees, collect sap and process it into syrup. She will also discuss how these magnificent trees play a growing part in the commercial sugaring industry in Washington State and the Pacific Northwest. And audience members will get a tasting of bigleaf maple syrup at the end of the presentation!

March has been tapping bigleaf maple trees on her land for over a decade. She became fascinated by these native trees and this renewable sugar source and enjoys sharing her excitement! She has been a Clallam County Master Gardener since 2016 and plans to be one for life. Prior to moving to Port Angeles in 2013, March and her family lived half of their life together all over the globe, as her husband served those years in the U.S. Navy. Travel adventures developed in them a lifelong love for exploration and learning. March has entered a slightly more settled phase of life and is happily developing roots while maintaining her love for exploring. She can be found in her garden daily.

The Green Thumb Education Series, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners, is held in person typically on Thursdays from January through May, and September through November. Scheduled presentations are subject to change.
