Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 4th of April.
Good morning, Port Angeles.
The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society said in a letter that mistakes in running its Bark House, which housed too many dogs and had untrained staff, made the shelter unsafe and led to an eight-month closure starting in August 2024.
The shelter now has 14 dogs waiting for adoption and improved practices through staff training and facility upgrades—helping it better care for at-risk animals and inviting community visits.
The Port Angeles School District announced a groundbreaking for a new middle school will take place on April 12 at 10:00 a.m. behind the current site at 1139 W 14th Street—voters approved a Capital Levy in 2020 to fund the project, which will begin construction this spring and open in 2027.
Mark Hodgson announced his candidacy to run for Position 3 on the Port Angeles City Council; Council member Lindsey Schromen-Wawrin (the current officeholder) endorsed him.
Raised locally with a 20-year law enforcement career and service in the U.S. Navy, he said he will focus on public safety, affordable housing and economic development.
Corrections deputies Alexander Hamilton and Cameron Needham graduated from the Corrections Officer Academy at the state Criminal Justice Training Center in Burien.
Hamilton, a Port Angeles High School graduate who worked as a truck driver, and Needham, a Sequim High School graduate who worked at Olympic Game Farm, were assigned to duties at the Clallam County Jail—continuing their roles in law enforcement.
Olympic Medical Center is looking at a plan to join Jefferson Healthcare and form a new group called Peninsula Health Alliance that would have a combined board with seven seats for Clallam County — giving them more votes — and five for Jefferson County.
OMC said no final decision has been made and that meetings are kept private as they search for long-term stability, with a choice expected in May.
On Tuesday, two Port Angeles High School sailing team members put out on the harbor and their small boat flipped in choppy winds.
The program will host a regatta on Saturday and Sunday and offers low-cost sailing lessons to help teams compete for spots in the championships in Columbia Gorge on May 10-11.
