Good morning, Port Angeles. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 9th of May.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 33-year-old Forks man—Tyler D. Ness—died after a falling tree struck him while working at a remote logging site south of Clallam Bay on Wednesday morning when his site supervisor called 911 at about 8:44 a.m. and first responders transported him, though he suffered cardiac arrest en route to a hospital.  Peninsula Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Clallam County Superior Court judge issued a 14‑day order halting logging in two Elwha River watershed parcels as activists block access by placing debris on roads with a climber on a dunk tank platform. DNR law officers now surround the tree while a preliminary injunction hearing in the next two weeks will decide if logging stops for three to four months.  Peninsula Daily News
  • A USDA report from May 1 shows that Olympic snowpack was 74% of normal and April rains were 65% of typical amounts, and experts say water supply will be below average through summer—river flows like those on the Elwha and Dungeness are expected to drop.  My Clallam County

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today is the final day to file to run for the primary election; in Clallam County (49 candidates for 36 offices) and Jefferson County (39 candidates for 32 positions), filings show several races remain unfilled and candidates who wish to withdraw must do so by end-of-business Monday.  Peninsula Daily News
  • Clallam County Sheriff Brian King said that an extra $2 million in the state capital budget has made the new joint Public Safety Facility near the airport financially viable to replace the seismically vulnerable courthouse basement and to house the county’s emergency operations center and PENCOM dispatch center. Officials are at 60% design and will review updated plans and cost estimates on May 22 — a key step toward finalizing the project.  My Clallam County
