- ➤ Corrections staff at Clallam County Jail found suspected drugs on July 28 after an inmate tip led to a search that uncovered a plastic baggie with a white crystalline substance likely meth—and further investigation revealed that 39-year-old inmate Nicholas Baker allegedly smuggled the drugs, with several other inmates cited for major infractions. - ➤ Members of the Cheam First Nation from Rosedale performed a canoe dance on Friday as protocols began for visiting native groups at Paddle to Elwha 2025 on the Lower Elwha Klallam reservation west of Port Angeles—native bands from across the region will dance through Tuesday. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The PREP program at Peninsula College, funded by a $4.3 million Gates Foundation grant, has helped more than 1,300 local high school juniors and seniors with college advising and offered campus tours to over 800 students—these efforts began last fall in Clallam, Jefferson, Kitsap and Mason counties. This year the program will expand to boost dual-credit enrollment and improve FAFSA completion rates—key steps to help more students overcome barriers to higher education. Peninsula Daily News

- ➤ Campfires have been banned in Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest since Friday, August 1 because hot, dry conditions and active fires have raised the danger—only gas or propane stoves that can shut off the flame immediately are allowed in campgrounds if no flammable material is within three feet.
